Like in Bach’s day

in BavariaI’ve been in Germany, where I attended a christening in a lovely old Baroque church in Bavaria (see photo). Music was provided by friends and family members playing various instruments in the gallery of the church. The baby’s grandfather had composed a Pastorale for four wind instruments and organ specially for the occasion, and played the organ himself in the performance. Afterwards we stomped through the snow to have coffee and cake in an old restaurant across the road, where more live music was played by various guests. We admired this community music-making. It all felt pleasantly like taking a trip in a time machine back to Bach’s day.
