Graz prizewinners

Here are all the winners of the Graz Competition on stage at their Gala Concert on Thursday evening. Two piano trios, three Lieder partnerships of singer and pianist, and three string quartets (not all of whom are visible in the photo). For details of who won what, here’s the competition website.

After listening to all the piano trios in a smaller, modern hall during the three Rounds, it was a surprise to hear them in a much larger hall at the prizewinners’ concert.  They seemed a) smaller and b) bigger. Or was it the other way round? As part of the jury, I felt responsible for the outcome and was probably listening with more than usual intensity, switching constantly between being objective and subjective.
