My Nocturne book has just come out in Australia. I recently did a podcast interview about it for Readings Books in Melbourne, ‘Australia’s favourite independent bookstore’. The interviewer is Nico Callaghan.
The podcast is hosted by the bookstore and you can listen to it on their site, but I’ve been given permission to put the link on mine as well.
If you’d like to listen to this half-hour conversation about nocturnes and night music, you can listen below. The player is also available on my Books & Articles page, next to the cover image for Nocturnes. Happy listening!

I just listened to the podcast and it is a wonderful conversation! Thank you so much for sharing the link. The interviewer’s questions are so thoughtful and the range of information you were able to give in your responses is continually illuminating. I’m so looking forward to reading the book, as I have taken such pleasure in reading several others of yours. I came upon you quite by accident only just over a year ago via a book of yours in a list of recommendations, and have since listened to a couple of your recordings, and always enjoy the ideas you share here.
Thank you Gretel! Apologies for my delayed reply – I have been away for a few days. It’s very kind of you to send me such a nice message.
I haven’t read the book yet, but I moved to Melbourne just before Christmas and the main Readings bookshop is just down the road from me!
Whenever I hear the word “nocturne”, I’m reminded of the TV series The House of Eliott. I don’t know if anyone else remembers it, but Evie and Bea Eliott called their first fashion show “The Nocturne Collection”.
I never saw ‘The House of Eliott’, but it’s interesting to hear about a fashion show called ‘The Nocturne Collection’. When I was researching the book I found that the word ‘Nocturne’ had spilled over into lots of other fields including the naming of fabrics and colours, so a fashion show called ‘The Nocturne collection’ makes sense.
