My book comes out in the US today

I can’t pretend to understand why it takes six weeks for a book published in the UK to come out in the US, but of course there are many practical issues to do with book publishing that I’ve never had much to do with. I imagine boxes of books slowly crossing the Atlantic on boats, but it probably isn’t really like that. What happens during those six weeks?

Anyway, today my book Women and the Piano comes out in the United States. I look forward to these tales of determined women reaching some American readers. All right: reaching lots of American readers! And I hope some of them will get in touch.

Go west, young book!

I popped into a bookstore here in Australia and they told me that it is not due out here until May, but that there might be an unexpected delay and it won’t be out until July. I can only hope that’s because so many American readers are scrambling for it!

The review in the Gramophone magazine has intrigued me and I almost wrote in to protest. I don’t know why the reviewer would question Amy Fay’s inclusion in the book. Her book, ‘Music Study in Germany’, was a bestseller in its time and in my opinion was a major factor in the early appreciation of the music of Liszt (when it was still fashionable to revile it). I’m very glad to see Amy’s name in the book!

On BBC Radio 3’s Saturday Morning programme today (June 1st), American pianist Jeremy Denk said “Susan Tomes’ book on Women And The Piano has given me more pleasure than any other…”

I didn’t know that! I must try to find it. Thanks for drawing my attention to it, Craig
